Genetic structure of milk protein polymorphisms and effects on milk production traits in a local dairy cattle

Abstract: The milk protein genetic structure of the Reggiana dairy local cattle with remarkable milk quality properties was analysed and compared with the structure of Italian Friesian and Italian Brown cattle. A total of 1138 individual milk samples from the three breeds were typed by isoelectrofocusing. Polymorphism was found at the a s1 -casein (CSN1S1), b-casein (CSN2), j-casein (CSN3), and b-lactoglobulin (LGB) loci. High frequencies were observed for some casein alleles in Reggiana (CSN1S1*C, 25%; CSN2*B: 28%) wit… Show more

“…The most common alleles are A, B and E (Neubauerová, 2001). Allele A is associated with higher milk yield but lower protein content, while allele B is linked with higher protein content (Neubauerová, 2001) and higher milk quality (Strzalkowska et al, 2002) but lower milk yield (Boettcher et al, 2004;Caroli et al, 2004). The negative effect of allele E on milk protein quality was reported by Ikonen et al (1997).…”

“…Os alelos A e B (κ-caseína) estão associados à maior produção de leite e proteína (Caroli et al, 2004;Dagnachew et al, 2011). Aleandri et al (1990) relataram efeito quantitativo de variantes genotípicas do gene para β-lactoglobulina sobre a composição do leite e as propriedades do queijo.…”

“…This was first suggested in cattle by Grosclaude et al (1978) and was further developed in the same species (Aleandri et al, 1990;Ikonen et al, 2001;Boettcher et al, 2004;Caroli et al, 2004). The effect of an allele at a given locus could be confounded with the effect of linked alleles at another locus.…”
