Genetic variation of oregano (<i>Origanum vulgare</i> L.) for etheric oil in Albania

Abstract: In this study are presented the results of studies for oregano in 16 locations (sites) of Albania for the content of the quantity of oils and their fractions. Albania is the one of the important diversity centers for Oregano because of their adaptation to diverse agro ecological conditions as a result of natural selection. The design of the experiment was based on split plot methods. From the total samples collected, were selected 16 mostly widespread samples of natural populations of origano (Origanum vulgare… Show more

“…Another study have demonstrated the genotypical determination of the chemical diversity of Albanian O. vulgare populations. [52] In contrast, a study on the Turkish Origanum onites indicated that there is no relationship between genetic structure of the species and EO composition. [53] Other researchers [54] propose that some changes in the EO composition of the Italian O. vulgare are due to both genotype and habitat influences.…”

“…This phenomenon is widely described in current literature [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. However, despite of commonly accepted taxonomy, some authors treat O. vulgare as a collective species and do not distinguish particular subspecies [17][18][19]. Such data, based only on essential oil composition excluding morphological characters, can confuse understanding the complex problem of oregano variability.…”
