Genome Sequence of Erythromelalgia-Related Poxvirus Identifies it as an Ectromelia Virus Strain

Abstract: Erythromelagia is a condition characterized by attacks of burning pain and inflammation in the extremeties. An epidemic form of this syndrome occurs in secondary students in rural China and a virus referred to as erythromelalgia-associated poxvirus (ERPV) was reported to have been recovered from throat swabs in 1987. Studies performed at the time suggested that ERPV belongs to the orthopoxvirus genus and has similarities with ectromelia virus, the causative agent of mousepox. We have determined the complete ge… Show more

“…Interestingly the CPXV GerMygEK 938/17 sequence clustered close to ECTV, a virus causing white pocks lesions and not able to infect bank voles even with high titer inoculation [58]. ECTV itself has so far only been detected in laboratory colonies of house mice ( Mus musculus ) except for the human strain ERP [59]. In comparison to CPXV, ECTV comprises a shortened genome and a reduced number of genes, whereby many of the lost genes are associated with host interaction [60,61].…”

“…Moreover, it will serve as a guide to establish quality control procedures that the technology requires in our country and the region. Adicionalmente a la capacidad de utilizar esta tecnología enfocada para el diagnóstico molecular de enfermedades genéticas, también se puede utilizar para la identificación y tipificación de patógenos humanos o otros organismos [3]. Las secuencias genómica de estos patógenos obteni das de secreciones o tejidos infectados no solo identifi can al agente infeccioso, sino que proveen the informa ción valioza de su resistencia a antibioticos o antivirales para la selección más apropiada del tratamiento.…”

“…More recently, a cat with multicentric nodular ulcerative dermatitis was found positive for OPXV . The virus differed from cowpoxes common in cats and was grouped with an OPXV strain identified from captive macaques in Italy (Cardeti et al, 2017), related to ectromelia viruses (Chen et al, 2003;Mendez-Rios et al, 2012;Mavian et al, 2014).…”
