Genome‐wide gene expression profiles of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) under cold temperatures provide insights into body color variation

Abstract: Cold temperatures are one of the factors influencing color polymorphisms in Acyrthosiphon pisum, resulting in a change from a red to greenish color. Here we characterized gene expression profiles of A. pisum under different low temperatures (1°C, 4°C, 8°C, and 14°C) and durations (3, 6, 12, and 24 h). The number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) increased as temperatures decreased and time increased, but only a small number of significant DEGs were identified. Genes involved in pigment metabolism were d… Show more

“…The CYP3 and CYP4 clans in A. verrucosus generally bloomed in many families. CYPs are inducible under thermal stress (H. Zhang et al, 2018; L. Zhang et al, 2021). A common name for A. verrucosus is the desert ironclad beetle and it is adapted to the Sonoran Desert of the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico.…”

“…In addition, functions of blue pigments have been studied in other aquatic animals and plants. In Sander vitreus, concentration of blue pigments (sandercyanin) was higher in summer than other seasons, which may play roles in countershading and photoprotection [36]. Except for greening oysters, blue pigments produced by Haslea karadagensis showed multiple biological activities, including inhibiting the growth of marine bacteria and fungi and antiviral activity [37].…”
