Genome-Wide Identification of Cotton (Gossypium spp.) Trehalose-6-Phosphate Phosphatase (TPP) Gene Family Members and the Role of GhTPP22 in the Response to Drought Stress

Abstract: Trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP) is a key enzyme involved in trehalose synthesis in higher plants. Previous studies have shown that TPP family genes increase yields without affecting plant growth under drought conditions, but their functions in cotton have not been reported. In this study, 17, 12, 26 and 24 TPP family genes were identified in Gossypium arboreum, Gossypium raimondii, Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum, respectively. The 79 TPP family genes were divided into three subgroups by ph… Show more

“…Furthermore, there is increasing evidence that miRNAs (non‐coding single stranded RNA molecules of approximately 22 nucleotides in length) may regulate the expression of TPP genes in response to a variety of abiotic stresses. In cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum ), prediction of miRNA‐targeting gene networks of TPP family genes identified 21 potential interactions involving 12 miRNAs and 10 TPP target genes (Wang et al, 2022). Similar predictions in soybean ( Glycine max ) also revealed significant interactions between miRNAs and TPPs (Shao et al, 2023).…”

“…To assess the TPS or TPP evolutionary relationship of Chenopodium quinoa Willd, Arabidopsis thaliana (L.), and Gossypium hirsutum Linn . [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ], the phylogenetic trees of the TPS and TPP gene families were constructed, respectively. According to the phylogenetic tree, the TPS family members were divided into two classes ( Figure 1 A).…”

“…To identify the potential miRNAs targeting to CsDUF966 transcripts, the cucumber mature miRNA sequences reported by Burkhardt and Day [ 24 ] were collected. Then, miRNA and CsDUF966 CDS sequences were submitted to the online tool psRNATarget with default parameters ( , accessed on 18 June 2022) [ 45 , 46 ]. The targeting relationships of miRNA to CsDUF966 were further visualized by R package ‘ggalluvial’ [ 47 ].…”
