Abiotic stresses and climate changes cause severe loss of yield and quality of crops and reduce the production area worldwide. Flooding stress curtails soybean growth, yield, and quality and ultimately threatens the global food supply chain. Flooding tolerance is a multigenic trait. Tremendous research in molecular breeding explored the potential genomic regions governing flood tolerance in soybean. The most robust way to develop flooding tolerance in soybean is by using molecular methods, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, identification of transcriptomes, transcription factor analysis, CRISPR/Cas9, and to some extent, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and multi-omics techniques. These powerful molecular tools have deepened our knowledge about the molecular mechanism of flooding stress tolerance. Besides all this, using conventional breeding methods (hybridization, introduction, and backcrossing) and other agronomic practices is also helpful in combating the rising flooding threats to the soybean crop. The current review aims to summarize recent advancements in breeding flood-tolerant soybean, mainly by using molecular and conventional tools and their prospects. This updated picture will be a treasure trove for future researchers to comprehend the foundation of flooding tolerance in soybean and cover the given research gaps to develop tolerant soybean cultivars able to sustain growth under extreme climatic changes.

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is an important leguminous crop and biotic stresses are a global concern for soybean growers. In recent decades, significant development has been carried outtowards identification of the diseases caused by pathogens, sources of resistance and determination of loci conferring resistance to different diseases on linkage maps of soybean. Host-plant resistance is generally accepted as the bestsolution because of its role in the management of environmental and economic conditions of farmers owing to low input in terms of chemicals. The main objectives of soybean crop improvement are based on the identification of sources of resistance or tolerance against various biotic as well as abiotic stresses and utilization of these sources for further hybridization and transgenic processes for development of new cultivars for stress management. The focus of the present review is to summarize genetic aspects of various diseases caused by pathogens in soybean and molecular breeding research work conducted to date.

Soybean is a globally important crop being rich source of edible oil and protein. Traditional phenotypic-based breeding procedures have contributed significantly to the development of several improved soybean varieties. In this context, molecular breeding technology, is seen as a viable way to address the issues and providing great opportunities to accelerate the process of soybean breeding. Hence, marker-assisted breeding (MAB) has been greatly applied in the soybean breeding to accelerate the improved soybean cultivars, transgenic breeding technology achieves great success in the soybean production. New genomics approaches and the development of genome editing technologies have increased soybean genetic diversity in its germplasm and have created new possibility to make precise genes modifications to controlling essential agronomic traits in an elite background Besides, the establishment of genotype driven phenotypic design breeding model has become a great challenge for soybean molecular breeding in the future. These approaches have the potential to expand the practical utility of molecular design breeding and speed up the germplasm and breeding materials in soybeans. This chapter goes into great detail about how current advances in genomics and phenomics can increase the efficiency and potential of MAB, transgenic technology, molecular design breeding and gene editing technology in soybean improvement.
