Paleogeographic maps represent the ultimate synthesis of complex and extensive geologic data and express pictorially the hypothetical landscape of some region during a given time-slice of deep geologic time. Such maps, presented as paired paleogeographic and paleotectonic reconstructions, have been developed to portray the geologic history of the greater Arctic region over the past 400 million years. Collectively they depict four major episodes in the development of the Arctic region. The first episode witnessed early and middle Paleozoic terrane assembly and accretion during the Caledonian and Ellesmerian orogenies, which brought together many pieces of the Arctic collage along the northern margin of Laurussia. During the second phase, the assembly of Pangea in the late Paleozoic joined Siberia to Laurussia, an entity that became Laurasia during the subsequent break-up of Pangea. Then, Mesozoic subduction and terrane accretion constructed the Cordilleran margin and opened the Canada Basin. Finally, Cenozoic North Atlantic sea-floor spreading fully opened the Arctic Ocean.

The extent to which Paleozoic oceans differed from Neoproterozoic oceans and the causal relationship between biological evolution and changing environmental conditions are heavily debated. Here, we report a nearly continuous record of seafloor redox change from the deep-water upper Cambrian to Middle Devonian Road River Group of Yukon, Canada. Bottom waters were largely anoxic in the Richardson trough during the entirety of Road River Group deposition, while independent evidence from iron speciation and Mo/U ratios show that the biogeochemical nature of anoxia changed through time. Both in Yukon and globally, Ordovician through Early Devonian anoxic waters were broadly ferruginous (nonsulfidic), with a transition toward more euxinic (sulfidic) conditions in the mid–Early Devonian (Pragian), coincident with the early diversification of vascular plants and disappearance of graptolites. This ~80-million-year interval of the Paleozoic characterized by widespread ferruginous bottom waters represents a persistence of Neoproterozoic-like marine redox conditions well into the Phanerozoic.

The passive margins of Laurentia that formed during Neoproterozoic–Cambrian breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia record subsequent histories of contraction and translation. This contribution focuses on the northern margin of Laurentia, where recent geologic and geochronologic data have provided new insight into the evolution of northern North America. The Laurentian margin in East and North-East Greenland records synorogenic sedimentation and deformation associated with the Caledonian orogeny—the Silurian to Devonian continent-continent collision between Baltica and Laurentia that followed closure of the northern tract of the Iapetus Ocean. The timing of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism and simultaneous sinistral and dextral strike-slip faulting in North-East Greenland indicates that the Himalayan-style orogen persisted through the Devonian. In contrast, the Franklinian margin further west records sinistral strike-slip translation of allochthonous crustal blocks and arc fragments starting in the Ordovician–Silurian and culminating with the Devonian– Carboniferous Ellesmerian orogeny, the origin of which remains enigmatic. We suggest that Ellesmerian deformation was related to widespread transpression associated with northward motion of Laurentia during Acadian and Neo-Acadian deformation along the Appalachian margin rather than orthogonal ocean basin closure and microcontinent-continent collision. The Pearya terrane and North Slope subterrane of the Arctic Alaska terrane, separated from the Franklinian passive margin by the Petersen Bay fault and Porcupine shear zone, respectively, best preserve the Paleozoic translational and transpressional history of the northern Laurentian margin. These two major structures record a complex history of terrane accretion and translation that defines the Canadian Arctic transform system, which truncated the Caledonian suture to the east and ultimately propagated early Paleozoic subduction to the Cordilleran margin of western Laurentia.
