The article examines the essence of the European Strategy for the Conservation of Landscape and Biotic Diversity, the principles of formation, conservation and use of eco-networks in Ukraine, the existing problems of national and regional networks, taking into account the new administrative territorial structure at the administrative-district level and the level of territorial communities. The purpose of the article is to assess the functional and territorial structure of the protected and ecological networks of Ternopil region and to substantiate the ways of their optimization in modern conditions. The paper is based on the information obtained in the course of field expeditionary research in 2019–2022, as well as on statistical data, cartographic materials, and materials from the open network of aerospace satellite images Google Earth. The collected materials were processed using a system of methods (analysis, synthesis, comparison, decoding, cartographic, computer modeling, etc.). The data obtained showed that in 36.5% of the territorial communities, protected areas cover less than 1%. In order to improve the situation, the authors propose the creation of 53 new protected areas in 25 communities of Ternopil region with a total area of 39,358 hectares and substantiate the new core and connecting territories of the local rank of the regional eco-network.

“…It is relevant to investigate the applied aspects of the regional eco-network development since the natural complex of Podillia has a special local and state ecological and environmental significance. P. L. Tsaryk (2005) identified geographical aspects of the eco-network development in the Ternopil Oblast with justification for the creation of new protected areas; T. L. Andriienko (2006) defined and characterised the territories of the nature reserve fund of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast; in the future, these territories were fully included in the ecological network, which was developed and scientifically justified by L. S. Yuhlichek & T. V. Vyhovska (2012), indicating the place of the Khmelnytskyi Oblast eco-network in national and transnational eco-networks; O. V. Ukraine is going through a difficult time, and therefore the topic of the influence of military actions on the protected areas is extraordinary, since the war has negative consequences for nature: pollution by explosive objects (mines, unexploded shells, etc.), fortification construction, damage to current grounds and vegetation by explosions, military transport, forest and steppe fires etc. Donetsk region is exactly that part of Ukraine, where almost all the first nature reserves were organized at the beginning of the 20th century. Unique natural sights and endemic habitats have long been attracted the attention of scientists and conservationists. However, currently some of them have been and continue to be negatively affected by the war of 2014 and until now. The study of the impact of military actions on the protected territories of the Donetsk region was carried out based on the analysis of cartographic sources – the status of nature conservation territories was determined by dividing the objects into 4 groups: fully occupied, partially liberated, liberated and not occupied. The area of the territory that accurately indicates the damage was calculated (according to the area of occupied objects of the nature reserve fund). The partial impact on some protected areas of Donetsk region was characterized and the main causes of the impact of the war on natural objects were determined, namely shelling, shell explosions and caused fires. Also the impact of military operations depicted on satellite images was studied, using the case territory of the branch of Chalk Flora Nature Reserve, Holy Mountains National Nature Park and "Donetsk Ridge" Regional Landscape Park.
