Landslides frequently occur in Indonesia, especially in the geothermal areas located on Sumatra's mountainous island. On April 28, 2016, around 04:30 Western Indonesia Time, a landslide-induced debris flow occurred in Lebong District, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. The source area of the landslide was located at Beriti Hill on the Bukit Barisan Mountain Range. It resulted in 6 fatalities and damage to infrastructures such as geothermal facilities, roads, water pipes, houses, and bridges. Subsequent landslides and debris flows occurred on April 30, May 2, and 3, 2016. Therefore, this study aims to examine the mechanism and to know the most significant contributing factor to the Beriti Hill landslide. Site investigation, soil sampling, XRD analysis, and Lidar analysis were carried out in the research. Beriti Hill is a geothermal area with many manifestations and is composed of volcanic rocks. Alteration processes produced a thick layer of soil from volcanic rocks. The thick soil dominated by clay minerals and steep slopes is the dominant controlling factor of a landslide, triggered by high rainfall intensity. Debris flows are recurring events based on the Air Kotok river's stratigraphic data downstream of the landslide area. The debris flow material is toxic due to the low pH from the geothermal process. Therefore, the alluvial fan deposit area from Beriti Hill debris flow is a hazard zone and unsuitable for settlement and agriculture.

Landslides in geothermal areas are one of the environmental challenges that are attributed to their volcanic and hydrothermal systems. However, the inventory of landslides in geothermal areas remains considerably limited. This may implicate pitfalls, where characterisation of historical events is an essential practice in disaster risk management. Accordingly, this exploratory study aims to characterise landslide events in 19 geothermal areas with historical landslides. This introductory study was sourced from electronic news, scientific publications, and authoritative institutions. The collected records were cross-examined and integrated into comparable attributes. The resulting characteristics display the physical features, environmental factors, and mitigation measures as follows: (1) landslides commonly occur in small to extremely large volumes. However, serious tolls may be caused even by small-to modest-sized landslides. (2) Landslides may not be preceded by triggering factors but by their gradually weakened environment. (3) Although there are scattered sources and unclear information related to underreported landslides and understudied mitigation, respective authorities conduct rapid measures following the landslide event. Correspondingly, it is highly recommended to further improve and establish a landslide inventory database in geothermal areas that constitutes a more comprehensive overview for better risk management.

Determination of the Stability of a High and Steep Highway Slope in a Basalt Area Based on Iron Staining Anomalies

In recent years, geological disasters have frequently occurred on basarlt highway slopes. Studying the stability of highway slopes in this type of area is of great significance for traffic safety. However, due to the high cost and low efficiency of traditional monitoring and experimental methods for slope engineering, these methods are not conducive to the quick and comprehensive identification of regional slope stability. Due to the high iron content of basalt, iron staining anomalies in the ore prospecting field are reinterpreted from an engineering perspective in this study. Taking the S3K section of a highway in Changbai County, China, as an example, Landsat8 remote sensing (RS) images from 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2021 are selected, and principal component analysis is used to extract iron staining anomalies in the region. Combined with field investigation and evidence collection, the corresponding rock mass fragmentation is distinguished via iron staining anomalies. Then, according to previous research results, eight indexes including annual rainfall, slope, topographic relief, surface roughness, vegetation index, leaf area index (LAI), root depth of vegetation, and human activity intensity are selected for investigation. The artificial neural network–cellular automata (ANN-CA) model is established, and the rock fragmentation classification data obtained based on iron staining anomalies are used to simulate the area. Next, the calculation formula of slope stability is determined based on the simulation results, and the stability of a high and steep slope in the area is calculated and analyzed. Finally, a comparison with an actual field investigation shows that the effect of the proposed method is good. The research findings reveal that it is feasible to judge the stability of a high and steep slope in a basalt area via the use of iron staining anomalies as an indicator. The findings are tantamount to expanding the application scope of RS in practical engineering.
