Geophysical and geochemical evidence of Proterozoic collision in the western marginal zone of the Baltic Shield

Show more

“…The chemical composition makes it evident that the rocks could be described as a somewhat feldspar-rich, calc-alkaline suite. These rcsults are in general agreemen!.with results recently presented by Zuber & Ohlander (1990). These latter authors lump all rocks to the west of the Mylonite Zone into a general term "Grey SW gneisses".…”

“…NYF-type pegmatites are interpreted to reflect the crustal softening and extension that results from the thermal re-equilibration of orogenically thickened crust. Post-kinematic granitoids in southcentral Sweden coeval with these pegmatites were already earlier interpreted to reflect post-collisional crustal extension (Zuber & Öhlander 1990). Finally, the oldest TIB-rocks in southern Sweden Downloaded by [University of Calgary] at 23:07 03 February 2015 Fig.…”

“…3) differ in age by 20-50 Ma (see data in Johansson 1988;Larson & Berglund 1992;. As the TIB-rocks are interpreted to have formed in relation to a destructive plate boundary at the western margin of the Svecofennian region (Johansson 1988;Zuber & Öhlander 1990), the age difference is interpreted to reflect that this new destructive plate margin was initiated earlier to the south than to the north . Although the available geochronologic database is limited, the present data from fourpetrologically different sample suites seem to indicate a north-south rather than an east-west age zonation of the Svecofennian region.…”
