George de Hevesy (1885–1966), founder of Radioanalytical Chemistry

Abstract: George de Hevesy has founded Radioanalytical Chemistry and Nuclear Medicine, discovered the element hafnium and first separated stable isotopes. For all these different important achievements he was nominated for the Nobel Prize. On occasion of his discovery of activation analysis 70 years ago his life and work will be illustrated.

“…Their application as sensitive biochemical markers can be traced back to the work of George de Hevesy in the early 20th century, who initially attempted to isolate a radioactive isotope of lead, at the time known as radium-D, from hundreds of kilograms of lead chloride 147. Because he was not able to separate the two isotopes, he reasoned that the atomic number and not the atomic weight is responsible for the chemical properties of an element.…”

“…No new books on radiochemistry this year but the proceedings of a wide ranging conference held in Czechoslovakia have been published 1 which contained an interesting appreciation of the late George de Hevesy, 2 'the father of analytical radiochemistry'. Another conference, held in Bangkok, reviewed 3 the utilization of research reactors in SE Asia.…”
