Geothermal Energy in Colombia as of 2018

Abstract: Colombia is a country with great potential for the exploitation of geothermal energy due to its high volcanic activity caused by the subduction between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. However, this energy is yet to be exploited. This article seeks to describe, by means of a literature review and information processing, the current status of geothermal energy in Colombia, including the current regulations, the limitations, the recommendations to develop the geothermal energy, and some of the most … Show more

“…Colombia's energy vulnerability, together with the governmental policy of progressive promotion of sustainable development in the different national territories, has continuously generated favorable conditions for the development of geothermal resources. However, considerable work has had to be done in order to solve the technical, legal, institutional and infrastructural limitations that hinder the optimal development of these projects (Moreno-Rendón et al, 2020).…”

“…Geothermal energy is heat energy that is stored inside the Earth and brought to the surface where it can be used [19]. This energy is reliable because it is independent of weather conditions.…”

“…This heat is generated by physical processes occurring at the surface and comes from the interior structure of the planet. On the Earth's surface, phenomena such as fumaroles, geysers and hot springs can be observed, demonstrating that heat can escape from the subsurface [19].…”

“…The only geothermal exploration well in Colombia (Nereidas 1) was drilled in 1997 on the western ank of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (VRN), and could not reach the predicted depth of 2000 m because it suffered a strong deviation (Monsalve et al 1998). Colombia has a great potential for the exploitation of geothermal energy, thanks to its strategic location within the re belt, which allows different thermal manifestations to be seen throughout the country (Moreno-Rendón et al 2020). Projections indicate that the geothermal potential on the Nevado del Ruiz volcanic complex is 50 MW.…”
