German Seismic and Infrasound Networks Contributing to the European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA)

Abstract: Germany has a long history in seismic instrumentation. The installation of the first station sites was initiated in those regions with seismic activity. Later on, with an increasing need for seismic hazard assessment, seismological state services were established over the course of several decades, using heterogeneous technology. In parallel, scientific research and international cooperation projects triggered the establishment of institutional and nationwide networks and arrays also focusing on topics other t… Show more

“…The era of modern broadband seismology started in the 1970s. In Germany, the establishment of the Gräfenberg-Array (GRF) and the regional German network (GRSN), operated by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) (Stammler et al, 2020), set new standards for seismic monitoring at the global level by using the newly developed high sensitivity broadband seismometers in combination with high resolution digital signal processing technology.…”

“…As the record of such waves has a long history, the monitoring technologies in this field are well established: Local and global networks of seismic, hydroacoustic, and infrasonic sensors such as the German Regional Seismic Network (GRSN; e.g. Stammler et al 2021 ) or the Global Seismographic Network (GNS; e.g. Gee and Leith 2011 ) record the waveform data and make it available to a wide scientific community.…”
