Show more

“…At the sporophytic stage, fern plants seem to prefer higher light levels than during spore germination and at the gametophytic stage. At the study site, individuals of the arborescent C. divergens were more abundant at sites with >4% of light (compared to the open; Riaño & Briones, 2013), whereas sporophytes of the herbaceous P. schiedeanum and M. laxa occupied preferably darker slopes with 1%–4% (López‐Romero et al, 2016) and 1%–2% of light (Flores‐Galván, 2018), respectively.…”

“…The spores of all three studied species are positive photoblastic and sensitive to the quality of light, and at least P. schiedeanum and C. divergens can germinate at very low photon flux densities (0.04 μmol m −2 s −1 ). Although the three species are able to germinate under the observed light levels of 7.7–97.1 μmol m −2 s −1 in the understory at the study site during the rainy season (Riaño & Briones, 2013), germination decreased with increasing amounts of sunlight (López‐Romero et al, 2016; Riaño et al, 2015). On the other hand, litter cover severely inhibited spore germination and gametophyte development of eight fern species at the study site, even when light levels (above the litter) ranged between 7% and 23% of the open (Flores‐Galván, 2018; Salvador Martínez, 2014).…”
