Gestational age and birth weight in relation to aortic stiffness in healthy young adults: two separate mechanisms?

Abstract: Our findings suggest that prematurity drives the relation of gestational age and PWV, whereas risk of impaired glucose tolerance drives the relation of birth weight and PWV. We hypothesized that two separate mechanisms might be involved in the development of arterial stiffness in healthy young adults.

“…This is consistent with previous investigations (Fujiwara et al 2004;Mitchell et al 2004). The significant positive correlation found between PWV and age indicates that arteries become less elastic with age, and arterial stiffening was observed with increasing age (Oren et al 2003). Aging induces structural and functional abnormalities such as arterial wall hypertrophy and degeneration or disorganization of the medial layer.…”

“…The PWV was determined with the use of a SphygmoCor device (PWV Medical, Sydney, Australia), which allowed an online pulse wave recording and automatic calculation of PWV with two transducers (Millar SPT 301 pressure transducer; Millar Instruments, Sydney, Australia), one positioned at the base or the neck for the common carotid artery and the other over the femoral artery, as previously described [19,20]. The average of 10 successive waveforms was used in the analyses to cover a complete respiratory cycle.…”
