Getting started with qualitative research: developing a research proposal

Abstract: The aim of this article is to illustrate in detail important issues that research beginners may have to deal with during the design of a qualitative research proposal in nursing and health care. Cristina Vivar has developed a 17-step process to describe the development of a qualitative research project. This process can serve as an easy way to start research and to ensure a comprehensive and thorough proposal.

In order to assess the interpretation of the data (Vivar, 2007) participants were e-mailed a summary of the incidents and asked to respond if they felt a need to expand upon, or disagreed with, the analysis. All participants responded noting the incidents were an accurate fit, no expansions were provided.…”

“…An early pilot interview was conducted to test the interview method, evaluate Peter Rowe's interviewing skills, practice audiotaping, and determine the duration of the interview. 16,20 This interview was conducted with a PTO who had been deployed for only 30 days; it was not transcribed, and the data from it are not included in the study. The pilot interview was discussed with Christine Carpenter, and minor adjustments were made to the interview guide to encourage participants to respond as though they were talking to a civilian physiotherapist who was unfamiliar with the military.…”
