Giant symptomatic gastric lipoma: A case report and literature review

Abstract: HighlightsGastric lipomas may become symptomatic when ≥10 cm, at which point they are classified as giant gastric lipomas.Giant gastric lipomas are extremely rare, with only 6 prior cases reported in the English worldwide literature since 1980.Gastric lipoma density is similar to peripheral fat on CT, −80 to −120 Hounsfield units, which is nearly pathognomonic.Circumferential excision of gastric lipomas with a clear margin of normal tissue is adequate for symptomatic resection.Preservation of gastric continuit… Show more

“…On esophagogastroduodenoscopy, these lesions appear as soft, sharply defined, submucosal masses, often yellow in color as opposed to the surrounding pink mucosa. Several signs, such as tenting sign, cushion sign, and naked fat sign, have been described to help identify lipomas on endoscopic examination [15]. Sullivan et al, in their review, investigated the multimodality imaging findings of gastric lipomas.…”

“…The presence of septations or marginal defects may indicate ulceration or very rarely a liposarcoma. 2 Larger lesions may present with dyspepsia symptoms, gastric outlet obstruction or bleeding. 2 The latter is rare and only a few cases have been reported to date.…”

“…1 In rare cases, lipomas may appear in the other regions of the human body or even in internal organs such as heart or stomach. [2][3][4] Usually the resulting lesions are harmless and painless, therefore do not require treatment. However, if lipomas encroach on joints, nerves or blood vessels, their removal may be necessary.…”
