Ginger Essential Oil Ameliorates Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity in Mice

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the effect of ginger essential oil (GEO) in an experimental model of cisplatininduced nephrotoxicity. Methods: Male mice were divided into treatment six groups (n = 7), namely: Groups I (saline), II and III (cisplatin, 10 mg/kg, i.p.) days, respectively, and IV, V and IV (GEO, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg/day, respectively, by gavage 3,4, 5 and 6 days after cisplatin injection). Creatinine levels and protein/creatinine ratio were determined in plasma and urine, respectively. Bone morphoge… Show more

“…TNF-α, IL-1 (α and β), IL-6 and IL-10 play an important role in regulating the interaction between inflammatory, oxidative stress and apoptotic pathways in cisplatin-induced hepatotoxicity (Shaw et al, 2011[ 75 ]; Tadagavadi and Reeves, 2010[ 78 ]). Cisplatin initiates inflammatory processes by promoting TNF-α production in residents and infiltrating immune cells (Damião et al, 2013[ 27 ]). TNF-α is also secreted from activated Kupffer cells which later worsens the oxidative stress and inflammatory response in hepatocytes (Augustyniak et al, 2005[ 8 ]).…”

“…2012); and therefore was used as positive control in this study. Dose of BCP and PmEO is according to previous study by Cho et al (2007) and Damião et al (2013), respectively. The present study found that a single dose of cisplatin (10 mg/kg) induced toxicity symptoms including lacrimation, piloerection, hypoactivity and reduced food and drink intake in rats.…”

“…β-caryophyllene 150 mg/kg + cisplatin-induced (BCP), PmEO 100 mg/kg + cisplatin-induced (PmEO100CP), PmEO 200 mg/kg + cisplatin-induced (PmEO200CP), PmEO 400 mg/kg + cisplatin-induced (PmEO400CP) and PmEO 400 mg/kg alone (PmEO400). Doses, duration of essential oil and β-caryophyllene was given according to Damião et al (2013), Ebada (2018) and Cho et al (2007). PmEO were given orally for 14 consecutive days prior to a single dose of cisplatin (10 mg/kg ip.)…”
