Ginsenosides from Korean red ginseng modulate T cell function via the regulation of NF-AT-mediated IL-2 production

Abstract: Korean red ginseng is a traditional health food frequently used to prevent or treat various diseases worldwide. In this study, we evaluated the immunomodulatory activities of eleven compounds (1-11) isolated from Korean red ginseng, focusing on T cell function. First, the effects of the eleven compounds were studied on the regulation of IL-2, a potent T cell growth factor. Compounds 5, 7, and 9 significantly increased IL-2 secretion in phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)/ionomycin (Io)-induced EL-4 T cells. … Show more

“…Triterpene glycosides isolated from rare medicinal plants often display a wide range of pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory [21], antifungal [22], antimicrobial [23], anti-cancer [24], anti-diabetic [25] and immunomodulatory [26] effects. Indeed, triterpene saponins are the key active constituents of major medicinal herbs such as Panax ginseng (Araliaceae), Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Cucurbitaceae) and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Fabaceae) [27,28].…”

“…The resultant Ciência Rural, v.53, n.8, 2023. complex cyclosporine/cyclophilin inhibits calcineurin, which is a protein that mobilizes the NF-AT from cytoplasm to the nucleus (HAWKSHAW & PAUS, 2021). As NF-AT is a key molecule related to IL-2 synthesis (VINH et al, 2019), its inhibition affects the lymphocytes proliferation and culminates in the general regulation of the immune system (ARCHER et al, 2014;FELLMAN et al, 2019). Additionally, this drug is able to inhibit the prolongation of nerve endings in the epidermis and normalize keratinocyte proliferation and keratin production (KO et al, 2016).…”

“…Ginseng was also found to have immunological effects when combined with cyclosporine A (CsA) to differentiate simple T helper and regulatory T cells (Tregs), and to quantify their cytokine secretion utilizing CD4+ T cells agitated with the T cell receptor (TCR) or allogeneic APCs [ 51 ]. Ginsenosides extracted from KRG can increase the phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)/Ionomycin (IM)-stimulated T-cell growth regulator IL-2 function of NF-AT cells in EL-4 T cells [ 52 ].…”
