GIS-Based Multicriteria Evaluation of Land Suitability for Grasslands Conservation in Chihuahua, Mexico

Abstract: This study developed a GIS-based framework for the zoning of land suitability for grassland conservation (LSGC) in the Central Valleys of Chihuahua, México. For that, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based multicriteria evaluation techniques with weighted overlay (MCE-WO), and a fragmentation analysis were performed. The framework for LSGC consisted in the development of four scenarios: Nonintensive Agriculture, Intensive Agriculture, Urban, and Rural. The LSGC classes defined with the MCE-WO technique w… Show more

“…Weighted overlay analysis is a component of spatial modeling that uses multi-criteria evaluation, ascribing importance to the criteria in a differentiated manner Data overlay was carried out using the Weighted Overlay tool (ArcGIS 10.8), which is commonly used as it is one of the most efficient methods for performing multi-criteria spatial analysis. Weighted overlay analysis is a component of spatial modeling that uses multi-criteria evaluation, ascribing importance to the criteria in a differentiated manner [35]. This is a very convenient geographic information system-based technique that is very useful for solving problems that require a large set of variables covering vast areas that are sometimes inaccessible.…”

“…Multicriteria assessment methods are often integrated into GIS and used in optimal location analysis for a given activity, allowing continuous suitability maps to be obtained quickly. One of the key aims of multicriteria analysis is to assist decision-making centers in describing, evaluating, ordering, hierarchizing, selecting or rejecting objects, based on an evaluation expressed by scores, values or intensities of preference and according to various attributes or criteria [36,37].…”

“…Modern management of activities that have geo-spatial implications is also found in the study of grasslands (Bârliba and Cojocariu, 2010;Simon et al, 2017;Vázquez-Quintero et al, 2020). In recent years GIS analysis of grassland uses orthophotoplans obtained from overflight drones (Simon et al, 2018).…”
