One of the most important functions of an intelligent workstation is to provide a state-of-the-art user interface to distributed resources. One aspect of such an interface is virtual terminal support for both local and remote applications with a range of requirements, including graphics. To ensure good response for remote applications, in particular, the bulk of user interaction must be handled local to the workstation. Therefore, the terminal management software on the workstation must provide object modeling as well as viewing facilities, in contrast to most contemporary graphics systems. One way of doing this is to support structured display files. It is equally important to support simultaneous access to multiple applications; thus the terminal management software must provide window system Lscilities. Lastly, since the terminal management software should present a common interface to both local and remote applications, the workstation itself should be regarded as a multifunction component of the distributed system and not strictly as a terminal or a personal computer. This paper presents the system architecture and protocols necessary to achieve these goals and evaluates an existing implementation.

The process visualization system of a manmachine interface is presented. It allows human operator(s) to interact with a dynamic technical system, here a thermal power plant. Also, a graphical editor for designing dynamic pictures of the process visualization system is explained. Both new systems have a common architecture and are based on the computer graphics standard PHIGS-2D with extensions for handling non-graphical and graphical information. The hierarchical information structures are manipulated with lists and pointers in a dynamic visual database. The two menu-driven interfaces for designers and for operators are described with their multi-window display layouts. The software of both systems is highly portable to different hardware and to other application domains.

Implicit regeneration is a fundamental concept of the Graphical Kernel System (GKS), an IS0 International Standard, hut it is difficult to understand as presented in the English language specification of GKS. Consequently, it is a good example to use in determining whether formal specification techniques can be used effectively to describe and clarify graphics concepts of this kind. The problem is first motivated informally with a description of GKS concepts and terminology. A formal specification of implicit regeneration using a simplified model is then presented, and the notation that is used for its formalization (VDM) is described. Finally, properties of implicit regeneration are formulated and the specification is proved to conform to these properties. This demonstrates the applicability of formal specification to graphics software, because a sufficiently precise description of a complicated concept is provided that enables its consistency to be checked against an intuitive understanding of the concept as derived from the GKS document.
