Glandular Odontogenic Cyst

Abstract: This case report describes the clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features of the glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC). Although a relatively rare lesion not previously reported in the endodontic literature, the GOC is recommended for inclusion in a differential diagnosis of a dentoalveolar radiolucency. The GOC is a destructive lesion that can be easily misdiagnosed microscopically as a central mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

“…These features were observed in the present case, in which the panoramic radiograph revealed a unilocular radiolucent lesion in the anterior region of the mandible. According to Tran et al (2004), lesions that appear as unilocular radiolucencies located in the mandible include lateral periodontal cysts, simple bone cyst, keratocystic odontogenic tumour, ameloblastoma and central giant cell lesion. A lateral periodontal cyst does not usually exceed 1 cm in diameter.…”

“…1 They were renamed glandular odontogenic cysts by WHO in 1992 as there was no evidence of salivary gland origin. 2 The lesion is more prevalent in middle-aged adults, and although it may be found in both jaws, most are in the mandible. [3][4][5] Its size may vary.…”
