Abstract: Abstrrrct -Irregular peak signals were observed during the glide height avalanche testing of a laser textured disk. Those peak signals were analyzed and found to be consistent with the first ringing frequency of the slider vibration. The frequencies were also found to be mathematically related to the bump spacing and some specific slider speed where the irregular peaks located, and subsequently the frequencies can be calculated

To achieve lower flying height for high areal recording density, the laser zone texturing of the disk needs to be designed to reduce glide height. One problem of the laser bump design is that the regular laser bump pattern often produces glide resonance phenomenon, which leads to failure of the glide height test. However, it was found in this study that glide resonance is an intrinsic problem of the glide head used and resonance phenomenon depends on the type of the head slider, that is, the natural frequency of the slider body. Therefore, higher glide height or glide failure caused by glide resonance does not lead to head/media interface problem in the real drive operating conditions in which the data head is used. Pseudo-random bump pattern greatly reduces the glide resonance. Smaller bump pitch will also help to reduce the glide resonance. However, as bump spacing becomes smaller, glide height will be increased due to increased air pressure developed around the bumps. Lowering bump height is the most effect way to reduce glide avalanche.

Spinstand level testing has demonstrated a failure mechanism that may go undetected using standard strain gage and acoustic emission methods of data capture. Since normally static friction is higher than dynamic friction, dynamic friction measurements are often ignored, filtered, or sampled at a much lower data rate than static friction measurements. In this study, dynamic friction peak values significantly higher than the static friction were recorded during take-off of Pico heads on laser-textured media. Furthermore, data collected using an optical surface analyzer (OSA) showed a greater degree of wear on disks exhibiting high dynamic friction. FFT was employed to analyze the signal modulation of the high dynamic friction event. Resonance at a frequency of approximately 1050 Hz was found to be associated with the high dynamic friction. Experiments were designed to reveal factors that influence this resonance occurrence. The factors identified that contribute to this resonance were natural frequency of the head load arm, disk bump pitch, and lubricant thickness. The head/disk interface system is believed to be excited by an improper bump pitch if the lubricant layer is not thick enough to reduce the friction value.
