Global and Local Modeling of Land Use Change in the Border Cities of Laredo, Texas, USA and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico: A Comparative Analysis

Abstract: This paper estimates global logistic regression and logistic geographically weighted regression (GWR) models of urban growth in the adjacent border cities of Laredo, Texas in the United States and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas in Mexico, for two time periods from 1985 to 2014. Historical land use and land cover patterns were monitored through Landsat imagery from the United States Geological Survey to identify instances of urban growth through land type change. Data on socioeconomic variables related to urban growt… Show more

“…Consequently, global landscape patterns have undergone substantial alterations, leading to a surge in ecological and environmental issues, such as the urban heat island effect, environmental pollution, habitat loss, diminished biodiversity, and declining ecological functionality [2][3][4]. As a result, mitigating the adverse impact of urbanization on the environment and ecology, while also addressing the requirements of urban development, enhancing the quality of human habitats, and promoting sustainable development of regional ecological environments, has gained widespread attention [5][6][7].…”

“…51,52 The methods used to analyze the factors influencing drivers include principal component analysis, 53,54 logistic regression modeling, 55,56 and geographically weighted regression. 57,58 These methods of analysis have played important guiding roles in the study of land use change factors. However, the methods are unable to reflect the unique spatial heterogeneity characteristic of geographical phenomena, need to eliminate the influence of multiple covariances existing among independent variables, and have obvious shortcomings in explaining the mechanism of factor interaction.…”

“…Drivers form the cornerstone of a detailed study of land, which is essential for the sustainable utilization of land resources 51 , 52 . The methods used to analyze the factors influencing drivers include principal component analysis, 53 , 54 logistic regression modeling, 55 , 56 and geographically weighted regression 57 , 58 . These methods of analysis have played important guiding roles in the study of land use change factors.…”

“…Within the framework of our research, a number of scientific literature [1,2] do not consider in sufficient detail the legal basis of the protection of land relations within the framework of security. The key problem today, in our opinion, is the fact that there is no universal methodical approach to providing such protection and security [3].…”
