Global diversity of dipteran families (Insecta Diptera) in freshwater (excluding Simulidae, Culicidae, Chironomidae, Tipulidae and Tabanidae)

Abstract: Today's knowledge of worldwide species diversity of 19 families of aquatic Diptera in Continental Waters is presented. Nevertheless, we have to face for certain in most groups a restricted knowledge about distribution, ecology and systematic, particularly in the tropical environments. At the same time we realize a dramatically decline or even lack of specialists being able, having the time or the opportunity to extend or even secure the present information. The respective families with approximate numbers of a… Show more

“…The family Dixidae with only two genera, Dixa and Dixella, is one of the smallest families of Diptera in Palearctic Region. They predominate in clean waters and headwater sites (Ivković and Ivanković, 2019;Wagner et al, 2008). In this study, Dixa sp.…”

“…They prefer mostly betamesosaprobic habitats, but they also found in oligosaprobic and alphamesosaprobic habitats. The family Dolichopodidae has wide range of stream zonation preferences from crenon to metapotamon (Tachet et al, 2010;Wagner et al, 2008). The individuals of this family were more common in Site 3 and 33.…”

“…Only the Coleoptera share a diverse ecological repertoire with the Diptera, although beetles have no vertebrate parasites or haematophagous species. Also, with 12,700 aquatic species (Jäch & Balke 2008), beetles are not as diverse in freshwater habitats as are, at a minimum, the 39,000 aquatic species of Diptera (as calculated from Borkent 2012, Pape et al 2011, Wagner et al 2008.…”
