Global forest sector: trends, threats and opportunities.

Abstract: An account is given of the direction, risks and potential of forest-based industries in providing majority of the world's need for forest products. On the contrary, due to such activities, deforestation has increased and has mostly taken place in developing countries, along with the effects of globalization, climate change and industrialization. It is stated that forestry activities should lead to a more integrated and holistic view to maintain a more sustainable utilization of resources and provide better ave… Show more

“…These require whole-community involvement in the initial planning phases and throughout their implementation. In cases where there is conflict with other stakeholders (and forest carbon policies are not supported by all sectors of civil society), negotiated integration (of stakeholder objectives) may be the only possible solution (Corbera and Brown, 2008;Seppala, 2007). Projects that do not involve local communities are likely to fail (Boyd et al, 2007).…”

“…This problem is being partially addressed by increasing reforestation efforts and using plantations (FAO, 2010). For instance, even though the plantations' share of land comprised only 7% of the world's forested land, their share in the supply of roundwood, for example, was 30% in 2005 and is estimated to reach up to 80% by 2030 (Seppäla, 2007;Carle and Holmgren, 2008).…”

“…La FAO ha previsto un crecimiento del 25% en la demanda mundial de madera entre 1999 y 2010. Sólo en 2010, la revista anual del mercado de productos forestales de la Comisión Económica de la ONU para Europa (UNECE), indicó que el consumo de productos forestales en general en países desarrollados y en vías de desarrollo aumentó 5.6% (Barr & Cossalter 2004;Seppälä 2007;FAIMA 2011). Esta demanda no se puede cubrir con bosque nativo.…”
