Global Prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease – A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health burden with a high economic cost to health systems and is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). All stages of CKD are associated with increased risks of cardiovascular morbidity, premature mortality, and/or decreased quality of life. CKD is usually asymptomatic until later stages and accurate prevalence data are lacking. Thus we sought to determine the prevalence of CKD globally, by stage, geographical location, gender and age. A systematic… Show more

“…The global prevalence of CKD in all adults is estimated at between 10% to 16% (Dienemann et al, 2016), with the majority of people in stages 3-5 (10.6%) (Hill et al, 2016). The estimated prevalence of CKD varies considerably and this may be due to whether the disease has been diagnosed and also the methods for collecting national data for reporting in registries.…”

“…CKD is a costly and rapidly growing worldwide public health problem. A recent thorough meta-study revealed a consistent estimated global CKD prevalence (counting all five CKD-stages) between 11% and 13%, from which the majority was at CKD-stage 3 (6.4-8.9%) [1].…”

“…A recent meta-analysis reported that the global prevalence of CKD is estimated as 13.4% in general populations [2]. In the pathology of CKD, tubulointerstitial fibrosis, called renal fibrosis, is the final common pathway leading to end-stage renal disease regardless of initial nephropathies [3,4].…”
