Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the concept of global value chains (GVCs) in terms of the distribution of benefits among participating countries by deepening the international division of labor and including geographically distant and differently developed countries. Theoretical framework: The article emphasize that the involvement of countries in GVCs, along with benefits, has several risks associated with both endogenous and exogenous factors. Design/methodology/approach: The authors analyzed GVC studies and used such research methods as a case study and factor, comparative, and structural analysis. Russian and international statistical data were used as the study materials. Findings: The results of the analysis indicate that exogenous factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions have led to the breakdown of GVCs and increased their instability. To address these issues, the authors suggest increasing the domestic value added in industries that rely heavily on foreign resources, reforming GVCs by localizing partnerships through deglobalization processes, and seeking out new trading partners. Research, Practical & Social implications: The study authors propose to make changes to the current structure of GVCs. This can help minimize negative consequences for the economy through the introduction of practices aimed at increasing the number of suppliers, expanding sales markets, and optimizing production processes. Originality/value: The value of the study lies in its identification of both the advantages and challenges of GVC participation for countries. It also offers practical solutions to enhance the resilience of GVCs, making the study results relevant for policymakers, businesses, and industries involved in GVCs.

Purpose Global value chains (GVCs) are facing unprecedented pressures arising from structural changes in the global economy and exogenous shocks including military conflicts and the aftermath of COVID-19. Considering the importance of value chain analysis in the current environment, the purpose of the study is to provide an up-to-date overarching global value chain literature review study that offers suggestions for research and practice to ensure resilient value and supply chains. Design/methodology/approach The authors provide a comprehensive review of literature of the value chain, commodity chain and production network research based on a systems overview of 5,628 publications to identify the extent of research on vulnerabilities and resilience of value chains globally and gaps therein. To provide the systems overview, the authors use scientometric content co-occurrence analysis methods to analyze and identify gaps within the existing literature. Findings Based on this overarching review of the literature, the authors identify gaps in the literature primarily related to the issue of unpreparedness of value chains to exogenous shocks. The authors suggest future research directions and propose an integrative model along with recommendations for restructuring value chains for resilience amidst exogenous shocks. Originality/value This study carries out an overarching study of interdisciplinary GVC literature in the age of geopolitical and societal challenges and is thus able to offer holistic insights and propositions for future research.

El comportamiento de los mercados de productos básicos está influenciado por varios factores internacionales, incluyendo la oferta y demanda, las preferencias de los inversores y los factores de riesgo económico global. Los choques externos, tales como eventos políticos, económicos y naturales, pueden tener un impacto significativo en estos mercados. Por ejemplo, la guerra comercial entre Estados Unidos y China, la invasión de Ucrania por Rusia y la pandemia de COVID-19 han generado disrupciones en las Cadenas Globales de Valor (CGV), aumentando la volatilidad de precios y la incertidumbre. Los países menos desarrollados, que dependen en gran medida de la producción y exportación de materias primas, son particularmente vulnerables a estas perturbaciones. Este trabajo examina los efectos de estos choques, destacando sus consecuencias significativas sobre el comportamiento de los precios de las materias primas y en menor medida sobre el funcionamiento de las cadenas globales de valor.
