In the island nation of Trinidad, farmers have access to public extension services provided through the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries but still struggle to get the information they need in a timely manner. Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) offer opportunities to improve the relationship between Extension and farmers. This study, guided by the Uses and Gratification (U&G) theory, sought to assess Trinidadian farmers’ preferences for mobile ICTs. From a convenience sample of 200 farmers in Trinidad, results showed almost all farmers used text messaging, and most used multimedia messaging and WhatsApp. Farmers were deliberate in their selection of medium for receiving different types of information. Findings suggest two-way ICTs are contextually appropriate for communicating with Trinidadian farmers. This study highlights the importance of understanding the information needs and preferences of farmers to ensure effective extension service delivery. While many ICT mediums are available, communicators must seek to utilize those mediums that are widely accessible and adopted by the target audience. The U&G theory provided an appropriate framework to investigate farmers’ preference for ICTs and allowed a critical discussion on the suitability of ICTs in Trinidad’s extension system. Articles intended for publication should focus on international agricultural education and/or international extension education. Articles should relate to current or emerging issues, cite appropriate literature, and develop implications for international agricultural and extension education. Manuscripts, or portions of manuscripts, must not have been published or be under consideration for publication by another journal. For publication in the JIAEE, manuscripts must pass the JIAEE's double blind, referee process, where peer reviewers evaluate manuscript content and ensure readability. Reviewers are selected from the AIAEE membership. In the double blind, referee process, all references to authors are removed before the manuscript is sent to reviewers. Articles may be submitted for peer review a total of three times before they are no longer acceptable for publication in the JIAEE. Failure to meet the submission formatting guidelines will result in an automatic first rejection. Two different types of articles are solicited for the JIAEE: Feature Articles and Research Notes. Feature Article A Feature Article should focus on philosophy, current or emerging issues, and the methodology and practical application of specific research and appropriate technologies, which have implications for developed and developing countries. Conceptual/Theoretical and Methodological manuscripts are also encouraged as submission for feature articles. If applicable, a feature article should report the findings from a fully investigated study. Feature articles are no longer than 20 double-spaced pages, excluding references. Research Note A Research Note is a concise but complete description of a limited investigation that will not be included in a later manuscript. It serves one of the following purposes: (1) presents initial proofof-concept results on new ideas or program evaluations, timely issues, or innovative approaches; (2) reports replications or extensions of previously published research that does not merit another full-length manuscript yet provides results that contribute to a greater understanding of the phenomena under study. Research Notes are no longer than 10 double-spaced pages, excluding references.

Seeing others suffer and enjoying it? The Model of Individual and Social Appraisals of Misfortunes of others in media reception

Suffering and misfortunes of other people are often portrayed in the media. Recipients react to these portrayals with different emotions. This article elucidates and clarifies schadenfreude (pleasure at the misfortune of others) and sympathy (feeling concern or sorrow over another person’s distress) in media experiences. A thorough literature review provides in-depth insights into the formation of affective dispositions and schadenfreude from various psychological perspectives. This conceptual analysis leads to the “Model of Individual and Social Appraisals of Misfortunes of Others” (MISAM) which first reveals the determining intrapersonal factors within the emotional experience of schadenfreude and sympathy. Second, it discloses the social component vital for understanding the construction and regulation of these emotions. The model combines individual and social appraisal processes and identifies the factors involved in the elicitation and regulation of schadenfreude and sympathy in the media reception of misfortunes. With the aim of integrating different perspectives, we incorporated Affective Disposition Theory and recent work from social psychology and used an appraisal framework. The MISAM opens the path for further investigation of schadenfreude and sympathy in media reception, beyond entertainment experiences.
