“…GSTs are the most widely studied conjugation enzymes that play an important role in the detoxification of xenobiotic compounds. Increased mRNA expression and catalytic activity of GSTs have been associated with pesticide resistance in insects (Lagadic et al,1993; Ku et al,1994), and drug resistance in cancer cells (Tew,1994; Hayes and Pulford,1995). In the present study, the mRNA expression of GSTR gene was elevated at 8 h after exposure to 0.1 mg L −1 MG and the mRNA expression of GSTR and GSTA were induced significantly in primary Nile tilapia hepatocyte cultures by 1.0 mg L −1 MG at 24 h. These results suggested an augmented capability of Nile tilapia to detoxify the MG; whereas significant decrease in GSTA mRNA expression was also observed in the liver of Nile tilapia at 8 h after exposure to 0.5 mg L −1 MG.…”

“…GST activities (toward model substrates 1-chloro-2,4-dinitro benzene (CDNB) and 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenzene (DCNB)) are significantly increased in OP (organophosphate) and pyrethroid resistant strains of the fall armyworm (Yu, 1992). Plutella xylostella GST3 exhibits relatively high activities toward DCNB and some OPs, suggesting that it might be related to OP resistance in the diamondback moth (Chiang and Sun, 1993;Ku et al, 1994;Huang et al, 1998). The OP phoxim was widely used to control Helicoverpa armigera in China in the 1980s, and resistance to it has developed in Chinese populations (Wu et al, 1997).…”

“…The authors found differences in substrate specificities and the presence of different proportions of the same three isozymes in susceptible and organophosphorus resistant strains of P. xylostella. The following year, Ku et al isolated a fourth GST isozyme (GST-4) from P. xylostella [242]. When compared to the three GSTs already identified it was found to be very similar in terms of its biochemical and toxicological properties to GST-3, but less closely related to GST-1 and GST-2.…”
