Glycerosomes: Advanced Liposomal Drug Delivery System

Abstract: Gupta et al.: Glycerosomal Drug Delivery Systems Although liposomes have proved to be versatile in the field of drug delivery, there are still some issues that need to be addressed mainly problems related to entrapment, penetration, fluidity and stability. Glycerosomes represent a novel drug delivery systems composed of phospholipids, water and glycerol in varying amounts. Glycerosomes are upgraded versions of liposomes meant for topical and transdermal drug delivery. In these preparations, glycerol acts as an… Show more

“…Other vesicular carrier systems that have been explored for the delivery of fisetin are ethosomes and glycerosomes. Both of these are phospholipidic vesicles with high bilayer fluidity used for dermal and transdermal drug delivery [ 81 , 82 ]. Glycerosomes loaded with the drug fisetin displayed added benefits, such as enhanced penetration of the drug into deeper layers of the skin due to glycerin, resulting in lipid fluidization and hydration of the skin.…”

“…Cholesterol enhances the stability of GM as well as maintains the lipid membrane integrity by causing barrier to the aqueous phase. When GM dispersed in aqueous phase, phospholipid rapidly arranges themselves as bi-layer vesicles [ 28 , 29 ].…”

“…The mixing ratio, flow rate, and lipid concentration, as well as mixing temperature, can be controlled by the user and result in different-sized particles with varying dispersity [ 92 , 93 ]. This technology is frequently used in industry to produce LPs in continuous processes at large volumes using a microfluidizer [ 94 ]. Despite the advantages of this technique in particle size and target molecule loading, the use of organic solvents in the process remains an issue [ 91 , 95 ].…”
