Going all the way - Detecting and transmitting events with wireless sensor networks in logistics

Abstract: The logistics domain constitutes a promising application area for wireless sensor network technology. Wireless sensor nodes can be deployed for example in containers or trucks' load areas to monitor environmental parameters relevant to the condition of transported goods in real time. Exploiting their computation and communication capabilities, wireless sensor nodes can locally detect the occurrence of critical situations, so-called events, and send corresponding alarm messages to responsible decision makers vi… Show more

“…Early detection of potential issues through real-time evaluation enables proactive actions. Im-proper temperature management in the supply chain has been linked to signi cant product losses, with some studies reporting up to a 35% loss [4]. Worldwide post-harvest losses contribute to 25% of food waste, with improper temperature control being a signi cant factor [5].…”

“…The main causes of food discarding among consumers and retailers are the food aspect, outdating, and safety uncertainty [ 1 ]. Damage and spoilage of foods lead to around 15% of waste, which increases to 35% if food is subject to inadequate storage and transport conditions [ 2 , 3 ]. Mathematical modelling describing the evolution of food quality indicators, under given storage and transport conditions, is central to minimising food waste [ 2 ].…”

“…Además, es una fuente importante de ingresos en muchos países [10]. Sin embargo, debido a la rápida degradación que sufren los productos de la pesca, cerca de un 15 % de los mismos se desperdicia, llegando hasta el 35 % cuando las condiciones de almacenamiento no son adecuadas [5,14]. Las principales causas de descarte de alimentos entre consumidores y minoristas son la pérdida de calidad sensorial y la incertidumbre sobre la seguridad alimentaria [11].…”
