Going transnational? Candidates’ transnational linkages on Twitter during the 2019 European Parliament elections

Abstract: How transnational are European Parliament (EP) campaigns? Building on research on the European public sphere and the politicisation of the EU, this study investigates to what extent the 2019 EP campaign was transnational and which factors were associated with 'going transnational'. It conceptualises Twitter linkages of EP candidates as constitutive elements of a transnational campaign arena distinguishing interactions with EP candidates from other countries (horizontal transnationalisation) and interactions wi… Show more

“…Social media like Twitter provide rich opportunities for the study of relational linkages between users. Among other applications, research has made great use of it for empirical inquiry into networks of right-wing extremism (Knüpfer et al 2020) and for assessing the "transnational arena" in which European Parliament election campaigns take place (Stier et al 2021). Similar to previous researchers, we stuck to the relational signifiers built into Twitter's affordance architecture, namely retweets.…”

“…While retweeting is the most frequently used in-built function for making reference to other content within the Twitter platform, sharing URLs constitute the standard practice of hypertext referencing within the much wider web-based media environment. Retweets: In most Twitter-based communication studies using network analytical methods, retweets are conceived as direct links between the retweeting user and the user that has been retweeted (Ruiz-Soler, 2018;Stier et al, 2021). While such standard operationalization of social ties in Twitter research seems straight forward, it is important to keep in mind that Twitter ties, including retweets, are relatively weak (Takhteyev et al, 2012).…”

“…Because of the multi-level structure of European politics and diverging incentive structures depending on the national context, they receive varying degrees of attention within the national campaigns (Braun and Popa, 2018; Braun and Schwarzbözl, 2019). However, being included in national party platforms seems crucial for the Spitzenkandidaten , as this creates ample opportunities to be exposed to the national electorate (Franklin, 2014) – through direct contact with national campaigns, either offline or via social media (Popa et al, 2020; Stier et al, 2020b) and websites, or through media coverage of campaign activities (Gattermann, 2020; Schulze, 2016).…”
