Gold-Embedded Hollow Silica Nanogolf Balls for Imaging and Photothermal Therapy

Abstract: Hybrid nanocarriers with multifunctional properties have wide therapeutic and diagnostic applications. We have constructed hollow silica nanogolf balls (HGBs) and gold-embedded hollow silica nanogolf balls (Au@SiO HGBs) using the layer-by-layer approach on a symmetric polystyrene (PS) Janus template; the template consists of smaller PS spheres attached to an oppositely charged large PS core. ζ Potential measurement supports the electric force-based template-assisted synthesis mechanism. Electron microscopy, UV… Show more

“…The Lan-PdNPs@GSH/DOX demonstrated a rapid rise in temperature under NIR irradiation. The local hyperthermia not only ablated tumor cells directly but also cooperatively enhanced cell uptake of nanocarriers, promoted DOX release, increased intracellular drug concentration, therefore improved the therapeutic effect of DOX . Because of the synergistic effect of chemotherapy and PTT, the cell viability in the Lan-PdNPs@GSH/DOX plus laser group was far below that in any single therapy (free DOX or PTT).…”

“…Anisotropic gold nanoparticles are more likely to exhibit LSP in the near-infrared radiation (NIR), which make them particularly interesting for bio applications such as SERS-based biosensing, imaging, and cancer therapy [22]. These capabilities extend to scenarios where gold nanoparticles are seamlessly integrated into nanocomposites, further broadening their potential application as needed [23,24].…”

“…In addition to HMONs, some metal hollow nanostructures with strong NIR absorption show high photothermal conversion efficiency and excellent photoacoustic imaging (PA) ability due to the local plasmon resonance effect [91][92][93][94][95][96]. In 2019, Liang and co-workers synthesized a temperature-sensitive polymer modified Pt-CuS hollow structure [97].…”
