Gorgiabisazulene and Gorgiagallylazulene, Two New Guaiazulenoid Pigments from a Gorgonian Acalycigorgia sp.

Abstract: Two new condensed guaiazulenoid pigments, gorgiabisazulene and gorgiagallylazulene, have been isolated from a gorgonian Acalycigorgia sp. and their structures have been established on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical evidence.

“…Its structure was established on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical evidence. 85 In addition to 2,2 0 -diguaiazulenylmethane 82, first reported as a synthetic product, 86 2,2 0 -biguaiazulenyl 83 was also an antimicrobial constituent of the gorgonian Calicogorgia granulosa. 87 Moreover, 82 was also found in a deep-sea gorgonian Pseudothesia sp.…”

“…from Japan yielded two new guaiazulenoid pigments, gorgiabisazulene (478), which was toxic to brine shrimp and inhibited cell division in fertilized sea urchin eggs, and gorgiagallylazulene (479). 344 The sesquiterpenes (463)-( 479) were all identified by spectroscopic methods.…”

“…Reports from various sources show that azulene and GA are widely used as ingredients in cosmetic, beauty, skin and body‐care products 3. GA is an effective anti‐oxidant4 and several compounds with azulene structure have been reported to have various bioactivities, including anti‐inflammatory, antispasmodic, antibacterial and antifungal properties 5–7…”
