Gossypiboma in the oral region: case report and literature review

Abstract: Gossypiboma is an inflammatory reaction to a foreign body, specifically composed of a cotton matrix left behind after surgery. The present study aims to present a case report of gossypiboma 23 years after a dental surgery and to make a literature review of the English language cases published on the issue. A 42-year-old woman was attended to evaluate complaints of pain on the right side of the maxilla. The patient reported that dental extractions in this region had been performed over a period of nearly 23 yea… Show more

“…Using the keywords “gossypiboma” and “paranasal sinuses,” only five case reports were found on PubMed. They are listed in the reference section of this article . All the patients whose cases were reported in those articles had undergone surgery on the maxilla prior to the appearance of the symptoms: Three of them benefitted from a Caldwell–Luc approach, one underwent a tooth extraction and the last one benefitted from a cyst enucleation of the maxilla using an unknown approach.…”

“…Gossypiboma or textiloma defines a mass inside the body composed of retained surgical gauze or sponge surrounded by an inflammatory foreign body reaction . Very few cases involving the maxillary sinuses were reported . The authors describe a case of a cancer‐like gossypiboma of the paranasal sinus that extended to the nasal fossa, the orbit, and the oral cavity.…”

“…Thus, taking into account the amount of ma typically shows a core of degenerating hemostatic agent surrounded by an inflammatory reaction that includes giant cells, granulomas, collagen deposition, reactive vascular proliferation, and fibroblastic proliferation (4) . Fibers from cotton pledgets are characteristically identified by their hollow, cylindrical profiles under H&E staining (24,25) .…”

“…Gossypiboma is a term used for a retained surgical sponge, and it represents a rare complication [1][2][3] with an uncertain incidence probably due to medical-legal implications [2,4]. The word is derived from the combination of the Latin word 'gossypium' for 'cotton' and the Swahili word 'boma' for 'place of concealment' [2][3][4][5]. It can be defined as a mass within the body composed of cotton matrix, which usually refers to a forgotten wound dressing surrounded by a foreign body reaction [4,5].…”

It can be defined as a mass within the body composed of cotton matrix, which usually refers to a forgotten wound dressing surrounded by a foreign body reaction [4,5]. While the medical literature has previously described cases of this entity after surgery procedures, gossypibomas in oral and maxillofacial region are rare [2].…”
