GPON and V-band mmWave in green backhaul solution for 5G ultra-dense network

Abstract: Ultra-dense network (UDN) is characterized by massive deployment of small cells which resulted into complex backhauling of the cells. This implies that for 5G UDN to be energy efficient, appropriate backhauling solutions must be provided. In this paper, we have evaluated the performance of giga passive optical network (GPON) and V-band millimetre wave (mmWave) in serving as green backhaul solution for 5G UDN. The approach was to first reproduce existing backhaul solutions in Very Dense Network (VDN) scenario w… Show more

“…As a result of its cost-effectiveness for multiple connections to homes and small business enterprises (SMEs), the PON technology is globally used for fiber optic last-mile internet connections [3]. Gigabit passive optical networks (GPON), a gigabit per second speed version of the PON, is an optical system for the access networks based on ITU-T specifications G.984 series [13]. It can provide a 20 km reach with a 28 dB optical budget by using class B+ optics with a 1:32 split ratio.…”

“…When selecting modules, the study should carefully read their description or consult the manufacturer. It is not enough to be guided only by the type of interfaces and their number-the study also needs to know the structure of the module [20]. While transporting traffic, it is not uncommon for some packets to be processed automatically, while others may send packets to the central processing unit for further processing (accordingly, for the same external modules, their price may vary several times).…”
