Gradient Analysis of Urban Construction Land Expansion in the Chongqing Urban Area of China

Abstract: Urban construction land-use expansion is an important topic in the field of land-use change research. In the present study, the temporal and spatial changes of urban construction land use in the Chongqing urban area are analyzed, based on land-use maps from 1975, 1987, 1995, 2000, and 2010. Using gradient analysis, the study area was divided into nine buffer zones and eight quadrants. The study analyzed the compactness of the urban construction land in different buffer ranges and different directions, and fur… Show more

“…Remote sensing (RS), coupled with a geographic information system (GIS), has been successfully applied in urban expansion studies [38][39][40]. Moreover, landscape ecology approaches, such as landscape metrics [41,42], patch dynamics [43], and gradient analyses [44,45], may be conducive to characterizing the dynamics of urban expansion and describing the details and structures of spatiotemporal patterns at multiple scales [46][47][48][49]. Recently, analyses of temporal variation and the scale effect were carried out by applying landscape indices to multi-scale or multi-temporal datasets [50][51][52][53].…”

“…Characterizing the spatial distribution of UNLS can facilitate a better understanding of urban form [13], particularly as detecting spatial regularities assists in solving certain social problems in the real world [14,15]. UNLSs, referring to the spaces where urban residents engage in leisure activities between 6:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M., have wide-ranging impacts on urban economic growth [16], employment [17], urban competitiveness [18], urban vitality [19], and social justice [20,21]; consequently, UNLS is considered one of the key countermeasures to activate the urban economy; and accordingly falls under the scope of this paper [22]. A UNLS map can indicate the socioeconomic activities that are carried out in different urban nighttime areas.…”

“…One seminal research was conducted in 1995 by the International Geosphere Biosphere Program and International Human Dimension Programme, which launched the Land Use/Cover Change research program and received enthusiastic responses from many international organizations and governments [6,7]. Many scholars have carried out a large number of studies on the expansion of construction land, from perspectives of influences of changes in construction land [8], pattern measurement [9] and driving mechanism [10], and effectively exploring the influence of social and economic development [11], population size [12], transportation [13], living standard of residents [14] as well as urbanization process [15]. Kantakumar et al [16] analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics of construction land expansion in Pune, India, using remote sensing technology.…”
