Grafted Methyl Methacrylate and Butyl Methacrylate onto Natural Rubber Foam for Oil Sorbent

Abstract: NR foam was modified via graft copolymerization with oleophilic monomer such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) or butyl methacrylate (BMA). Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polybutyl methacrylate (PBMA) were prepared by emulsion polymerization. The average particle size of PMMA and PBMA emulsion were 58.7±5.3 nm and 57.6±0.8 nm, respectively. The effect of PMMA or PBMA emulsion loading onto NR foam was studied over the range 0.05 2.0 phr. The functionality of modified NR foam was characterized by Fourier Transfor… Show more

“…The addition of PMMA or PBMA (0.1-1.0 part per hundred part of rubber, phr) performed the petroleum-based liquid sorption capacity in the range of 1.5-12 g g 21 . 31 In the present work, NR foam was prepared by latex mixing and steam vulcanization method as described in the previous work. To extend the scope of research, the wide range of poly(alkyl acrylate) emulsion addition has been studied (0.5-5.0 phr).…”

“…Compared with the former three, natural rubber latex foam (NRLF) is a porous material with a low density [4,5]. NRLF has the characteristics of elastic resilience, absorbency, providing sound insulation, being shockproof and providing ventilation [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. At present, the commercial products made from NRLF mainly include mattresses and pillows.…”
