Living polystyryl lithium was synthesized by anionic polymerization under the protection of argon at normal pressure, and styrene, toluene, tetrahydrofuran, and n-butyllithium were used as a monomer, solvent, polar reagent, and initiator, respectively. Then, polystyrene oligomers containing several pendent epoxy groups with well-defined structures and narrow molecular weight distributions (weight-average molecular weight/numberaverage molecular weight < 1.1) were prepared by the reaction of polystyryl lithium with glycidyl methacrylate. The prepared oligomers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 H-NMR, and the hydrochloric acid/dioxane argentimetric method. The effects of the glycidyl methacrylate dosage, molar mass of polystyrene precursors, copolymerization time, and temperature on the content of side epoxy groups were also investigated. The results confirm that 1,1-diphenylethylene-end-capped polystyryl carbanion could initiate glycidyl methacrylate in toluene in the presence of lithium chloride and a small amount of tetrahydrofuran, and the content of the side epoxy groups could be adjusted.

An interfacial grafting radical polymerization method for amphiphilic comb copolymer and shell crosslinked polymer nanocapsules was reported. Macropolyradicals on a water soluble long chain polyamine were generated with hydrogen peroxide in the water phase and subsequent grafting radical polymerization of a vinylic monomer at the water/oil interface proceeded at 65°C. In the presence of a crosslinker, the resulting graft copolymer formed a defined core‐shell structure with hydrophilic aqueous core functionalized by the polyamine and a hydrophobic crosslinked polymer shell. The structure of the core‐shell material was characterized by NMR, FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, TEM, and the mechanism of the graft polymerization is proposed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two multifunctional iniferters, 1,4-bis-(a-N,N-diethyldithiocarbamylisobutyryloxy)-benzene (BDCIB) and 1,3,5-tris-(a-N,N-diethyldithiocarbamyl-isobutyryloxy)benzene (TDCIB), were successfully synthesized and used as initiators to initiate the polymerization of styrene in the presence of a CuBr/PMDETA complex. The polymerization results demonstrated that the kinetic plots in all cases were first-order to the monomer, the molecular weight of the polymers increased linearly with the monomer conversion; meanwhile, the molecular weight distribution of the polymer was kept to a very low value (M w /M n 1.35). Furthermore, the measured molecular weights were very close to the calculated values, which indicated the high efficiency of the initiator for the polymerization of styrene. The effect of catalyst concentration and initiator concentration was not obvious and the influence of polymerization temperature was apparent, and the polymerization rate increased with the polymerization temperature. The results of chain-extension and 1 H NMR analysis proved that the polymer obtained was capped with diethylthiocarbamoylthiy (DC) group.
