Grafting of cellulose–thiocarbamate with vinyl monomers: Antimicrobial activity

Abstract: SynopsisGrafting of vinyl monomers onto cellulose-thiocarbamate was carried out using ceric ammonium sulfate (CAS) as a n initiator. The graft yield was found to depend on the amount of thiocarbamate groups, initiator, and monomer concentrations as well as temperature. The graft yield increased with increasing (CAS) concentration. The reactivity of vinyl monomers studied followed the order ethyl acrylate > acrylonitrile. A comparison between the graft yields obtained with the modified cullulose indicated that … Show more

“…Lignin carbamates were prepared according the previous work. 3 One mole lignin carbamates were dissolved in acetone condensed with (1 mol) of p -nitroanalhe for 8 h to form lignin-p -aminophenyl carbarnate. Reduction was effected by impregnation of this new compound in a solution containing thiourea dioxide (0.25% ) and NaOH (0.25% ) at 80°C for 10 min using a liquor ratio of 1 : 50.…”

“…Currently available sutures do not have antimicrobial characteristics and, thus, it is necessary to modify these sutures in such a way that they not only retain inherent mechanical properties but also exhibit antimicrobial activity for prolonged periods, thus preventing bacterial infections in postoperative wounds. Considerable efforts have been made by different researchers to make antimicrobial polymers 6–12. This can be accomplished either by the addition of an antimicrobial agent to the polymer chips before extrusion6–8 or by coating a polymer with an antimicrobial agent 9–12…”
