Grain Refinement Performance of Aluminium Cast-Alloy by Deformed Al-Al3Ti Alloy Refiner

Abstract: Grain refining experiments for casting of pure Al were conducted to evaluate the grain refinement performance of an Al-5mass%Ti alloy refiner before and after cold rolling. Al3Ti particles in the Al-Ti alloy refiner were efficiently fragmented by cold rolling. The size of the Al3Ti particles in cold rolled Al-Ti alloy refiner decreased from 280μm to 30μm with increasing reduction ratio of cold rolling. Mean size of α-Al grains in pure Al cast refined by the cold rolled Al-Ti alloy refiner decreased from about … Show more

“…As shown in Figure 16 , Vickers hardness value inside Al/TiO 2 FGMs is constant with about Hv = 19, regardless of the volume fraction of TiO 2 in the powder mixture. This hardness is almost same as the hardness of pure Al [ 19 ]. On the other hand, the Vickers hardness on the surface is the highest, as shown in Figure 16 .…”

“…Meanwhile, the time needed for the conversion of columnar to fine equiaxed grain structure decreases clearly, and the fading of grain refinement is almost not found 11,13. Similar works have been carried out on Al–Ti and Al–Ti–C master alloys, and the results show that improved Al 3 Ti particles greatly increase the grain refining efficiency of master alloys 14,15. However, all of these techniques will increase the production cost of master alloys in varying degrees.…”

“…11,13 Similar works have been carried out on Al-Ti and Al-Ti-C master alloys, and the results show that improved Al 3 Ti particles greatly increase the grain refining efficiency of master alloys. 14,15 However, all of these techniques will increase the production cost of master alloys in varying degrees. Therefore, much work still needs to be carried out to find an optimal method that has both better refining efficiency on Al 3 Ti particles and lower production cost of master alloys.…”

“…Of the several processes employed to manufacture Al-Ti alloys [19][20][21][22][23] that which involves the addition of K 2 TiF 6 to a stirred body of molten aluminium are the most popular [24]. K 2 TiF 6 is readily reduced to Ti, producing a melt with a dispersion of Al 3 Ti particles which is subsequently cast into small ingots.…”
