Grapevine Plant Genetic Resources-Improvement, Preservation and Biodiversity

Abstract: Progress in application of techniques, analyses and procedures used in EEC grapevine certification schemes are discussed. Biotechnology, virology and molecular biology as a successful approaches for genetic improvement of the existing grapevine varieties and rootstocks are also considered. Development, maintenance and evaluation of Bulgarian pre-basic grape genebank and a certification scheme related to the European Legislation appeared to be a promising step for solving the key problem for revitalisation of B… Show more

“…It is directed mainly to regulating the business activity related to grapevine cultivation in the country and legislation, and winemaking activity. Researchers from AgroBioInstitute, supported by leading Bulgarian producers of grapevine planting material established and maintained a pre-basic genebank of Bulgarian and global grapewine varieties (26). The grapevines from National grapevine variety list were genotyped and procedure for verification of identity of the planting material was developed (18,19).…”

“…The oldest fossils surely attributed to the wild and cultivated grapevine date back to this period (approx. 1 million years ago), while other species of the genus Vitis are considered to be part of the European fossil flora from the beginnings of Eocene, 40 millions years ago (Tsvetkov et al, 2005).…”
