The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission and its successor GRACE Follow‐On (GRACE‐FO) mission provide humans with a unique perspective on mass distribution through accurate temporal gravity field models. However, these models suffer from unavoidable stripe errors in the spatial domain. A new approach based on image processing has been developed for filtering GRACE and GRACE‐FO spherical harmonic solutions. In this approach, the gravity fields are treated as noise‐contaminated images, and the stripe errors are expected to be suppressed by convolving the input with an appropriate kernel. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a closed‐loop simulation environment over the nominal mission lifetime of 5 years is designed. Image processing indicators and geophysical information evaluation results demonstrate the superior performance of the new approach in suppressing stripe errors. In the context of real GRACE data processing, our new approach still yields better results as follows: 1) The comprehensive ability of de‐striping and retaining details has slight advantages over some commonly used filters, as demonstrated through spatial distributions, amplitude spectra, and coefficient spectra. 2) The equivalent water height time series at the basin scale is comparable to the results derived from other filters or Level‐3 products. 3) The estimated signal amplitude of the Mw9.1 2004 Sumatra earthquake co‐seismic gravity change is 52.7% larger than that derived from the Gaussian 300 km filter, which is much closer to the theoretical value derived from the dislocation theory.

This paper reviews measurement techniques and corresponding devices used to determine the physical properties of the seasonal snowpack from distances close to the ground surface. The review is placed in the context of the need for scientific observations of snowpack variables that provide inputs for predictive hydrological models that help to advance scientific understanding of geophysical processes related to snow in the near-surface cryosphere. Many of these devices used to measure snow are invasive and require the snowpack to be disrupted, thereby precluding the possibility for multiple measurements to be made at the same sampling location. Moreover, many devices rely on the use of empirical calibration equations that may not be valid at all geographic locations. The spatial density of observations with most snow measurement devices is often inadequate. There is a need for improved automation of snowpack measurement instrumentation with an emphasis on field-based feedback of measurement validity in lieu of postprocessing of samples or data at a lab or office location. The scientific future of snow measurement instrumentation thereby requires a synthesis between science and engineering principles that takes into consideration geophysics and the physics of device operation.

Continental hydrological loading by land water, snow and ice is a process that is important for the full understanding of the excitation of polar motion. In this study, we compute different estimations of hydrological excitation functions of polar motion (as hydrological angular momentum, HAM) using various variables from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) models of the land-based hydrosphere. The main aim of this study is to show the influence of variables from different hydrological processes including evapotranspiration, runoff, snowmelt and soil moisture, on polar motion excitations at annual and short-term timescales. Hydrological excitation functions of polar motion are determined using selected variables of these GLDAS realizations. Furthermore, we use timevariable gravity field solutions from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) to determine the hydrological mass effects on polar motion excitation. We first conduct an intercomparison of the maps of variations of regional hydrological excitation functions, timing and phase diagrams of different regional and global HAMs. Next, we estimate the hydrological signal in geodetically observed polar motion excitation as a residual by subtracting the contributions of atmospheric angular momentum and oceanic angular momentum. Finally, the hydrological excitations are compared with those hydrological signals determined from residuals of the observed polar motion excitation series. The results will help us understand the relative importance of polar motion excitation within the individual hydrological processes, based on hydrological modeling. This method will allow us to estimate how well the polar motion excitation budget in the seasonal and inter-annual spectral ranges can be closed.
