Tremendous technology development in the field of Internet of Things (IoT) has changed the way we work and live. Although the numerous advantages of IoT are enriching our society, it should be reminded that the IoT also consumes energy, embraces toxic pollution and E-waste. These place new stress on the environments and smart world. In order to increase the benefits and reduce the harm of IoT, there is an increasing desire to move toward green IoT. Green IoT is seen as the future of IoT that is environmentally friendly. To achieve that, it is necessary to put a lot of measures to reduce carbon footprint, conserve fewer resources, and promote efficient techniques for energy usage. It is the reason for moving towards green IoT, where the machines, communications, sensors, clouds, and internet are alongside energy efficiency and reducing carbon emission. This paper presents a thorough survey of the current on-going research work and potential technologies of green IoT with an intention to provide some clues for future green IoT research.

Recently, Internet of things (IoTs) has become the main issue in designing monitoring systems such as smart environments, smart cars, and smart wearable devices. IoTs has transformed the life of people to be more adaptable and intelligent. For example, in a healthcare monitoring system, using smart devices will improve the performance of doctors, nurses, patients, and the healthcare industry. The IoTs revolution is known as the fourth industrial revolution and would change the way humans interact with machines and lead the way to a high-technology machine-to-machine interaction. In fact, almost every device around us would be connected to Internet, collecting and exchanging data with other devices on the cloud. In this chapter, we will introduce the benefits of IoTs on telecommunication networks and its challenges to give a complete overview for researchers to know how to improve our life and society by building smart IoTs systems.

An IoT-based Smart Orchard Monitoring System by Employing Wireless Sensor Networks

In this study, an IoT-based smart orchard monitoring is proposed to gather and transmit environment data from a sensor node to a central node for necessary and relevant actuation in order to have good produce at the soonest amount of time. Wireless sensor motes are deployed based on a simple linear pattern across a square farm and only require the minimum set of specifications to monitor its surrounding. On the other hand, the central nodes will require more processing power, memory and power requirements. Sensor and central nodes communicate in a line-of-sight method and follows a deterministic routing table based on the sensor node’s four neighbors. Throughput, latency, and energy consumption results are presented to allow designers and farmers consideration and freedom on how to select which routing protocol can be used to achieve their target objectives
