Green product innovation, green dynamic capability, and competitive advantage: Evidence from Chinese manufacturing enterprises

Abstract: This study focuses on how green product innovation affects green dynamic capability and competitive advantage in the Chinese manufacturing industry. The empirical research indicates that green product innovation is positively correlated with both competitive advantage and green dynamic capability, whereas green dynamic capability also has a significant impact on competitive advantage. Furthermore, this paper finds that the resource integration capability, resource reconfiguration capability, and environmental … Show more

“…Recently, an increasing number of empirical studies have used the dynamic capability (DC) view to frame sustainability under organization and management perspectives (Beske, Land, & Seuring, 2014; Demirel & Kesidou, 2019; Leonidou, Leonidou, Fotiadis, & Aykol, 2015). Researchers have operationalized heterogenous constructs and subdimensions, including those grouped and named for the first time by Amui, Jabbour, de Sousa Jabbour, and Kannan (2017) as dynamic capabilities for sustainability (DCsS), to analyze causal relationships in different fields of study such as innovation management (Qiu, Jie, Wang, & Zhao, 2019; Zhou, Hong, Zhu, Yang, & Zhao, 2018), strategic management (Lin & Chen, 2017; Yang, Zhang, Jiang, & Sun, 2015), and supply chain management (Hong, Zhang, & Ding, 2018; Song & Choi, 2018).…”

“…Consequently, green dynamic capability can be viewed as an extension of dynamic capability but applied to the field of environmental management (Qiu et al, 2019). Compared with dynamic capability, enterprises need to integrate resources related to environmental protection (Zahra, Sapienza, & Davidsson, 2006).…”

“…Furthermore, in those few existing studies on the analysis of green dynamic capability (e.g. Dangelico et al, 2017; Qiu et al, 2019; Reyes‐Santiago et al, 2019), no guidance is provided about how to nurture green dynamic capability and help enterprises gain a competitive advantage. In other words, few studies have analyzed the driving factors of enterprises' green dynamic capability.…”

“…In today's highly industrialized era, Chinese manufacturing managers are primarily concerned with the organizational performance gains brought about by upgrading machinery and technology, and ignore the importance of factory worker interaction. In studies on the sustainable development and competitive advantage of SME manufacturing enterprises, researchers tend to focus on the utilization rates of new machinery and equipment [23], the innovative ability of skilled workers [24], green development [25], and the quality and quantity of outputs [26]. Few studies analyze the role of factory workers based on HRM.…”
