“Green structures” for effective rainwater management on roads

Abstract: Rainwater management is one of the important problems of cities. At very strong downpours, storm sewer systems may not capture the rainwater, which floods pavements and roadways. The water flushes fuel and oil traces after vehicles, fallen debris, and other pollutants, which will be moved to the ground, ponds, rivers, seas, etc. In past, the problems were solved using engineering approaches – a set of rainwater receivers, a duct network, and at best, wastewater treatment plants. Now, the sponge city concept is… Show more

“…Progressing urbanization process in the modern world, inadequate planning of sewerage networks, extreme climate change, and outdated drainage systems pose numerous challenges for scientists, architects, politicians, and administrators, among which the biggest problem is the increase in the area of impervious areas in settlements, which leads to urban flooding [1,2]. The sewerage system, which has a lifespan of only 20-30 years, is unable to effectively discharge sufficient stormwater due to the increase in runoff, and increasing its capacity is an extremely uneconomic solution [3,4].…”

Performing agriculture [44] on rain gardens and lawns should be limited to cities with strict pollution policies (green transport without lubricant leakage, no uncontrolled disposal, and others. ).…”

“…Концепція міста-губки передбачає максимальне використання наявних поверхонь для поглинання дощової води -«зелені» покрівлі, дощові сади, водопропускні покриття доріг та доріжок тощо [22]. Водостоки покрівель можуть обладнуватися резервуарами для збирання дощової води на технічні цілі [23].…”
