Green tea beverages enriched with catechins with a galloyl moiety reduce body fat in moderately obese adults: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial

Abstract: Objective To determine whether ingesting a green tea beverage enriched with catechins with a galloyl moiety during a meal reduces body fat in moderately obese adults. Design Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study. Subjects A total of 126 obese subjects (25 ≤ body mass index < 30 kg m(-2)) were randomly assigned to a group receiving green tea beverages without catechins (placebo), or a group receiving green tea beverages with a low or high content of catechins with a galloyl moiety. Each subject inges… Show more

“…Since the completion of this meta-analysis, additional RCTs investigating the effects of tea or cocoa products containing flavanols on lipid and anthropometric variables have been added to the existing literature [111,169,170,171,172,173,174,175,176,177,178,179,180,181,182,183]. The heterogeneity of these trials remains high with population samples including mixed sexes and ages, obese, overweight, healthy, hyperlipidemic and/or diabetic subjects, etc.…”

“…Also playing a key role in weight control is the down-regulation of a variety of pro-inflammatory adipocytokines, particularly tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) [68]. A clinical trial indicates that the inhibition of intestinal fat absorption may contribute to the weight loss after an ingestion of a green tea beverage enriched with catechins [69]. In summary, even though the intake of some specific polyphenols has been associated with body weight management, there is still not enough evidence for the effect of total polyphenols or some classes of polyphenols, and further studies are needed to explore the mechanisms involved as well as potential synergistic effects among them.…”

“…Green tea catechins have been reported to have various health benefits, including antiviral (Miura et al, 2001), antioxidative (Okuda et al, 1983;Yoshino et al, 1994), anticarcinogenic (Fujiki et al, 1998;Kada et al, 1985) and antiobesity activities Kajimoto et al, 2005;Kobayashi et al, 2016;Murase et al, 2000). In addition, catechins have hypocholesterolemic activities.…”
