Green Tea Polyphenols and Sulfasalazine have Parallel Anti-Inflammatory Properties in Colitis Models

Abstract: Background: There is no cure for autoimmune chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD patients commonly use complementary and alternative medications of which the safety, efficacy, and interaction with standard-of-care therapies are not fully known. Thus the consequences can become life-threatening. Sulfasalazine commonly used in IBD, potentially has severe adverse effects, including infertility, pulmonary fibrosis, lack of response, and ultimately patients may require intestinal resection. We hypothesized… Show more

“…() had determined the clear composition of the Fuzhuan tea extract (Table ). One of the ingredient, was green tea polyphenols (Oz et al ., ), proven to be effective in colitis, which supported our findings. A dose of 6.9 mg kg −1 EGCG has been demonstrated to exert anti‐inflammatory and anti‐oxidative properties and to reduce reactive oxygen species in the inflamed colon tissues (Bruckner et al ., ).…”

“…Such changes in gut microbial community are correlated as well with the increasing rate of IBD; particularly, frequent consumption of fast food meals, fatty acids and reduced intake of fruit and vegetables have been associated with the disease development [4346]. Moreover, polyphenols contained in fruit, and at high concentrations in green tea, can help to increase the levels of antioxidants and attenuate severity of colitis in the analogous way to sulfasalazine, reducing the rate of IBD in Iranians [43, 47]. The result of this study proposes that pasteurized milk would need to be considered as a weak transmission vector confirming the previous report [48] and is in line with other reports.…”

“…Heart, liver, and uterus were excised and weighed. Colonic contents were removed and colonic length and weigh data measured and flash frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at −80°C for future studies [32] [33]. Live fetuses were removed from uteri, counted, and weighed and their lengths measured using a digital caliper.…”
