Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Eco-Performance at Farm Level: A Parametric Approach

Abstract: Agriculture is an important source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and thus contributes considerably to global warming. However, farms can vary substantially in terms of their climatic impact. So far, most policies aiming at reducing GHG emissions from farming have largely been based on findings at the aggregate level, without taking farm heterogeneity properly into account. This study seeks to provide a better understanding of the GHG mitigation potential at the micro-level. We develop a comprehensible anal… Show more

“…Agriculture is an important source of greenhouse gases, which demonstrates its contribution to global warming. Stetter and Sauer (2022) analyzed whether GHGs can be attenuated at the micro level. The authors analyzed a number of farms, regarding the ratio of emissions dynamics to performance.…”

“…For instance, converting grassland to cropland could reduce emissions from the decreasing of peat soils in the Netherlands (Arets et al., 2020). Stetter and Sauer (2022) have studied the dynamic eco‐efficiency as the ratio between economic performance and environmental damage for four different types of Bavaria farms. Eco‐efficiency rewards production and penalizes pollution, but the production process is not explicitly modeled (Stetter & Sauer, 2022).…”

Stetter and Sauer (2022) conclude that dairy farmers are on average less eco‐efficient than mixed farms with livestock production and crop production.…”

“…Most agricultural policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have largely been based on aggregate-level evidence without adequately accounting for farm heterogeneity. Recently, attempts have been made to obtain GHG data at the farm level (Stetter and Sauer, 2022).…”
